The annual list is created by National Geographic's global team of travel editors, writers, and photographers, and celebrates inspiring places that combine natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sustainability.

Each year's Best of the World list features destinations that offer travelers something special, whether it is a unique cultural experience, stunning landscape, or a focus on responsible tourism. In 2026, Yamagata joins 24 other remarkable locations around the globe.
Located about 200 miles north of Tokyo, many would agree that Yamagata remains one of Japan's best-kept secrets.
