Gifu City is set to shine this winter with the return of Gifu Light Story, an illumination event that first started in 2020 to celebrate traditional crafts and modern technology alongside Gifu’s rich cultural heritage. Featuring Gifu Japanese umbrellas and Gifu paper lanterns which are both recognized as traditional crafts by the Japanese government, the event transforms the city’s nighttime landscape into a real winter wonderland.

The event takes place at two key locations—Gifu Park and Shoboji Temple—with one of the highlights set to be the koi pond projected in front of the park's Kanbukimon Gate. The projection mapping technology combined with the soft glow of the Gifu paper lanterns and traditional umbrellas creates a beautiful atmosphere that fuses old and new. You can get an idea of what to expect from the event via the video below.

Along with the lights, foodies can indulge in a variety of local and seasonal delicacies at the event. On weekends, almost a dozen food stalls will be set up around Gifu Park—weekdays will still have food options, but a reduced selection.

Admission Information

This is a paid event, with tickets priced at 1000 JPY for adults (counted as anyone university-aged or above), 500 yen for junior high and high school aged students, and free for those elementary school aged and below. Tickets can be arranged ahead of time online, or in-person at various venues around Gifu City including Gifu Grand Hotel and the Gifu Bus Information Center. More information on ticketing venues and websites can be found here (in Japanese).
