Fall Travel Trends From Airbnb Highlight Japan

Affordable luxury, seasonal scenery, and culture

This fall, global travel is being defined by Gen Z travelers looking for affordable luxury, vibrant seasonal scenery, and cultural depth. Many would agree that few destinations align with these priorities as seamlessly as Japan.

According to Airbnb, Gen Z international searches are up 26 percent this season, with younger travelers stretching their trips longer than before. Affordability is a key driver, and Japan's shoulder season (September through November) offers excellent value compared to peak spring. Flights and accommodations tend to be more accessible, and visitors can still enjoy the country at its most atmospheric.

Japan also appears on Airbnb's list of top trending fall destinations, with Osaka standing out as a global hotspot. The city combines budget-friendly eats, nightlife, and easy access to Kyoto's world-famous autumn foliage. For younger travelers eager to balance culture with fun, it hits the sweet spot.

Autumn leaves are another huge draw. Globally, 83 percent of travelers say foliage influences their travel choices, and the maple- and ginkgo-lined landscapes here in Japan rival any in the world. Kyoto's temples, Nikko's waterfalls, and Hokkaido's sweeping mountainsides all provide unforgettable viewing. Unlike the fleeting cherry blossom season, the autumn colors linger for weeks, making it easier to time a trip.

Beach escapes are also part of the 2025 trend, with travelers extending their coastal breaks into fall. Japan's own beachy hotspot is Okinawa, sometimes dubbed "Japan's Hawaii." Naha offers island culture, subtropical scenery, and warm waters well into November, making it a perfect shoulder season alternative.

Whether you're opting for Osaka's food stalls, Kyoto's temples, or Okinawa's shores, fall 2025 may be the best time yet to experience the country.
