Held each spring in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, the Tohoku Food Marathon is no ordinary race. Starting out from Naganuma Futopia Park, it blends endurance sport with local culture, food, and community spirit, making it one of Japan's most distinctive marathon experiences.

The event began in 2014 as part of recovery efforts after the Great East Japan Earthquake, with a mission to connect Tohoku with the world. Since then, it has drawn tens of thousands of runners and visitors, building a reputation for resilience and hospitality.

A standout feature is the food. Aid stations appear every two kilometers, serving specialties from across the region. It has even earned the nickname of "the only marathon where runners gain weight," thanks to the sheer variety of treats offered along the course.

The race program is designed to welcome participants of all levels. Alongside the full and half marathons, runners can join the 5km event, the parent-child race, or the KIDS Smile Run for children with disabilities. For those who prefer spectating, the venue also hosts the Tohoku Sake Festival and Tome Food Festival, creating a festive atmosphere that extends beyond the running track.

Adding to the fun, participants are encouraged to dress in costumes, with prizes awarded for creativity. The marathon also emphasizes sustainability, asking runners to bring reusable cups and chopsticks to reduce waste.
