It may not be as well known as its namesake in Kyoto, but the temple in Shizuoka called Kiyomizu-dera is no less worth a visit. Set in thick forest in Kiyomizuyama Park about twenty minutes' walk from Shizuoka station, it's a peaceful, atmospheric place to escape the bustle of the city. There are scores of ancient, weathered Buddhist statues, and under the eaves of he main hall there's a colourful dragon, waiting to swoop down on you.

Not the one in Kyoto, but still nice!

The steps at the entrance

One of the many Buddhist statues

I've rarely found a greener temple

A colourful dragon under the eaves of the main hall

There are dozens of little carvings like this dotted around

The bell pavilion

Some of the statues are damaged or weathered with age

The approach to the main hall

Intricate carving and plenty of labels

An incongruous modern building... but then, everything was new once

More ancient, ancient stone carvings

Here it is!
