Japan on Safest Travel List for 2026

Plenty of good news for those planning a visit!

Feeling safe when you travel really does change everything. It lets you explore with confidence, connect with new people, and enjoy experiences without constantly looking over your shoulder. That concept of safety isn't just about avoiding danger, but is about peace of mind, the freedom to get lost in a city's backstreets, or strike up a conversation with locals.

It's good news for visitors to Japan, which once again ranks among the world's safest countries for travel in 2026, coming in ninth on the latest list released by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. The annual report is now in its eighth year, and surveys thousands of travelers about where they have been in the past five years and how safe they felt in those destinations. Their responses are combined with external data from the Global Peace Index, Numbeo's Safety Index, and GeoSure Global city ratings to produce a weighted safety score for each country.

Despite its dense urban population, Japan continues to defy the assumption that safety only thrives in small or less crowded nations. The country ranks 12th globally on the Peace Index and 11th on Numbeo's safety rankings. Low crime rates, high social trust, efficient infrastructure, and strong civic norms all help contribute to this reputation for overall security.

Tokyo, in particular, remains one of the safest major cities in the world. Visitors often remark on the comfort of walking around late at night, using public transport without concern, and even leaving belongings unattended without incident. Still, travelers should stay aware of local rules, such as restrictions on certain prescription medications and the need to navigate rush-hour crowds with care.
