매년 3월 둘째 주 일요일 도쿄 서쪽에 있는 타카오 산에서는 야쿠오인사에서 불 위를 걷는 축제가 열린다. 야마부시 스님들은 용감하게 맨발로 뜨거운 석탄 위를 걷다가 찬송을 하고안전을 위해 기도하며 불순물을 깨끗이 씻어낸다.

일단 주요 불 자체가 꺼져 불 위로 걷는것이 더 안전한 상황에 놓이면 방문객들도 행사에 참여할 수 있게 된다.
