Characterized by its distinctive camel shaped twin peaks, Yufu-dake is a volcanic mountain that overlooks the picturesque resort town of Yufuin in rural Kyushu. From Beppu City, Yufu-dake can be reached in less than 45 minutes by a bus which passes through the stunning Aso-Kuju National Park, providing an excellent escape from civilization.
Starting off at ‘Yufu-dake Tozan Guchi’ and ending at Yufuin Town, this hike can be completed within 4-5 hours and includes a diverse range of landscapes. As you begin your ascent, you will initially pass through some lush green forest which gradually forms into dense shrubs. As you ascend even higher, the terrain then recedes into a barren wasteland towards the summit. Once you reach the top of Yufu-dake, you will soon realize that this impressive mountain is in fact a dormant volcano.
Standing at 1584 meters high, Yufu dake makes an excellent spot to have lunch where you can enjoy some unrivaled views of the spectacular landscape below which cannot help but resemble a scene out of ‘hobbit country’ from the ever popular Lord of the Rings franchise.
