When people think of artistic mediums, they might picture paint, canvas, or clay. Sand, however, is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. Despite this, Kamayahama Beach in Mitane Town, Akita Prefecture, is transformed into an outdoor art gallery each summer through the Sandcraft in Mitane Festival.

Recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Beautiful Swimming Beaches, Kamayahama provides the perfect stage for this unique celebration of creativity. Starting in mid-July, artists gather to carve intricate sculptures from the sand, including a towering main work that reaches up to 3.6 meters in height. Visitors are invited to watch the sculptors in action, offering a rare chance to see the creative process unfold right on the shore.

The completed works remain on display from late July until the end of September, with nighttime illuminations adding a magical glow to the seaside atmosphere. On the official "festival day" (July 26th for the 2025 event), the beach comes alive with local food stalls, music and dance performances, sand art contests, and a dazzling fireworks finale over the water.

Admission to the festival is free, though visitors are asked to contribute a 500 JPY environmental maintenance fee, which helps preserve the beauty of Kamayahama Beach for years to come. With free parking and easy access, the festival invites both locals and travelers to experience art, community, and summer celebration in an unforgettable setting.
